Stanford Falls Short Against Oregon State

Jan. 30, 2009

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team (4-12-1, 0-4 Pac-10) fell just short of its first Pac-10 win this afternoon at Burnham Pavilion, dropping a dual to Oregon State, 25-9.

Nick Amuchastegui (22-4) highlighted the match by avenging one of his four losses on the year, upending Oregon State's Keegan Davis at 165 pounds. The Cardinal redshirt freshman, who is ranked third in the Pac-10, came from behind to top second-ranked Davis and increased his career-long win streak to nine consecutive matches.

Sophomore 157-pounder Lucas Espericueta (22-11) picked up the most decisive Stanford win of the dual, while junior 197-pounder Jake Johnson (24-13) eked out a one-point win to round out the Cardinal scoring.

The day started at 125 pounds, where freshman Matt Sencenbaugh (6-22) lost a decision to Oregon State senior Jake Gonzales. Sencenbaugh battled back from a deficit and put Gonzales on his back in the final seconds, but came up short, 14-9.

Following the 125-pound bout, Stanford lost three more matches in a row and fell into a 13-0 hole. Sophomore Porfirio Madrigal (12-8) was defeated by Kelly Kubec, 5-3, at 133 pounds and Cameron Teitelman (10-14) lost a 13-4 major decision to Garrett Drucker at 141 pounds. At 149 pounds, junior Tyler Parker (1-1) suffered a 9-5 loss at the hands of the Beavers' first ranked wrestler, No. 16 Heinrich Barnes.

Espericueta finally put Stanford on the board at 157 pounds, using three takedowns to best Jon Brascetta, 11-4. The win, Espericueta's 47th of his career, brought him within three of the 50-win milestone.

Amuchastegui followed with another Stanford win, closing the gap in the team score to 13-6. Down 4-3 at the end of the second period, Amuchastegui escaped and then scored a takedown with less than 30 seconds remaining in the match to earn the 6-4 upset.

In the next bout, freshman Victor Haug (8-16) stuck with the nation's 11th-ranked 174-pounder, Kyle Bressler, but lost a 9-3 decision.

At 184 pounds, Johnson came from behind and scored a late third-period takedown to overtake Brice Arand, 7-6. Johnson's win pulled Stanford back within seven, 16-9.

Senior Luke Feist (15-10) followed with a close battle at 197 pounds, which was tied at 1-1 in the final minute of the match. Oregon State's Chad Hanke scored a takedown with less than five seconds remaining, however, and claimed a 3-1 win. With the decision, Hanke secured the victory for his team.

Redshirt freshman Matt Winterbourne (1-4) began the heavyweight match against Clayton Jack, but was forced to withdraw due to injury.

The Cardinal wrestles two more matches later tonight, taking on Portland State and Princeton in Burnham Pavilion.
