Cardinal Advances To ITA National Indoor Championships With 6-1 Defeat of Illinois

STANFORD, Calif. - The fifth-ranked Stanford women's tennis team qualified for the ITA National Indoor Championships courtesy of a 6-1 victory over No. 36 Illinois in the final qualifying match today at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium.

The Cardinal took the doubles point with two quick victories over the Illini, as Jessica Nguyen and Carolyn McVeigh knocked off their opponents, Chelcie Abajian and Marisa Lambropoulos, 8-2, and the No. 41 duo of Hilary Barte and Lindsay Burdette overcame their challengers, Megan Fudge and Leigh Finnegan, 8-3.

No. 26 Barte and No. 97 Burdette garnered the next two points for Stanford, as both won 6-2, 6-0 in their respective singles matches, and Courtney Clayton provided the clinching point for the second day in a row, this time at the No. 5 position, defeating Amy Allin, 6-0, 6-3.

The Cardinal will learn the field of the ITA Indoor Finals on Sunday, when qualifying matches around the nation conclude. Stanford will continue its non-conference dual schedule Thursday Feb. 5 at home against Cal Poly at 1:30 p.m.
