California Golden Bears Finish Third in Home Meet
Feb. 1, 2009
The California Golden Bear women's gymnastics team continues to improve each week, posting their highest overall team score of the season at their home tri-meet Sunday, Feb. 1 at Haas Pavilion. The Bears had a team score of 190.950. The Washington Huskies won the meet with a team score of 194.400, followed by the Illinois State Redbirds with a 181.350.
The Cal Bears started slow, but picked up the pace as the meet progressed. After posting a 46.825 on the vault, the Bears really started to click midway through the bars, with junior Sophia Hocini posting a 9.575. Senior Joanna Bennett followed with a 9.650. Senior Brigette Glass, coming back from injury, scored a 9.825 in her first competitive event of the season, placing second in the event. In their third rotation, the Bears scored a season-best 48.575 on beam. Glass bettered her bars score with a 9.850 on the beam, pacing the team and tying for the top score on the apparatus. Freshman Erica Varon was third on the beam with a 9.775, a personalbest. In their fourth rotation, all five Cal gymnasts scored 9.5 or higher on the floor, posting a season high 48.500 in the event. Sophomore Stephanie Cheng and Sophia Hocini each scored 9.725's. Sophomore Avery Gee dazzled with a 9.850.
Junior Sophia Hocini placed second in the all-around with a 38.575.
'It was the tale of two meets,' said head coach Cari DuBois. 'We started off shaky on the vault, and the first half of the bars, but then we really turned it around. We put in new upgrades on the vault this week. We need to work on execution, upgrading our skills, and executing our landings, but this team has so much potential.'
Cal falls to 0-7 on the season and 0-3 in the Pac-10.
The team has a week off, not returning to competition until Saturday, Feb. 13, when they travel to Tempe to take on Arizona State.
