Washington's Nedunchezhiyan, Arizona State's McKenna Named Pac-10 Men's and Women's Tennis Players Of The Week

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- WASHINGTON sophomore Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and ARIZONA STATE sophomore Kelcy McKenna have been named Pac-10 Men’s and Women’s Tennis Players of the Week for Jan. 26 - Feb. 1, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Nedunchezhiyan won both his matches at the ITA National Team Indoor qualifying in Athens, Ga., over the weekend. On Jan. 30, the Chennai, India, native defeated Santiago Gruter of Indiana, 6-2, 6-3. Against Georgia on Jan. 31, the sophomore upset 35th-ranked Jamie Hunt, 6-2, 6-3, for Washington’s only point in singles play against the two-time defending NCAA champions. He also won at No. 1 doubles with teammate Martin Kildahl, 8-4, to secure the doubles point for the Huskies.
This marks the second weekly honor for Nedunchezhiyan and the 6th overall for Washington.
McKenna led Arizona State to a win over No. 20 Florida State at the ITA Kick-Off in Atlanta, Ga. The North Bend, Ore., native knocked off two ranked oppenents, No. 35 Katie Rybakova of Florida State and defending NCAA singles champion 11th-ranked Amanda McDowell of Georgia Tech, in straight sets for the Sun Devils. In doubles, McKenna and partner Micaela Hein, upended the Yellow Jackets’ 4th-ranked duo of McDowell and Irina Falconi, 8-3.
This is the second weekly honor of McKenna’s career and the 5th all-time for Arizona State.
