Feb. 2, 2009
THIS WEEK IN PAC-10 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: As one of only two conference to have two teams ranked in the top seven in the Associated Press national ranking, the race for the Pac-10 crown heats up as the second half of league play gets under way this week. Third-ranked California and seventh-ranked Stanford look to solidify their positions at the top of the standings while hitting the road this week. Meanwhile, a rematch of cross-town rivals UCLA and USC takes place this weekend at Galen Center.
Fans can catch two games on national television this weekend with Arizona hosting Oregon and Washington hosting the Cardinal on FSN.
PAC-10 IN THE RANKINGS: Winning its school-record tying 10th game in a row, California jumped up to No. 3 in the Associated Press poll this week, tying its highest-ever ranking, while jumped up to No. 7 after two convincing wins. In last week's ESPN/USA Today Coaches, Cal reentered the top five, while the Cardinal bumped up three spots to No. 8. Arizona State, UCLA and Oregon State have all received votes in one or both polls at various points throughout the season.
When the poll was released on Nov. 24, it was the first time two Pac-10 teams have been ranked in the top five in the same week since the final poll in 1989-90. That year, Stanford was No. 2 and Washington was No. 3. Cal also achieved a first in that Nov. 24 poll, appearing in the top five in the ranking for the first time ever.
