Beavers Sweep Weekly Pac-10 Awards

Feb. 3, 2009

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Four titles and career or season highs in all but one event competition propelled Beaver teammates Mandi Rodriguez and Leslie Mak to Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week and Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week accolades, respectively, for January 27-February 3, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. The achievement marks the second time in as many weeks that an institution has swept the weekly awards (Jan. 21-27, UCLA).

Rodriguez, from Baldwin Park, CA, has established herself as the anchor of the 2009 Beaver lineup. Against No. 2 Utah on Friday, she asserted national dominance with a victory in the all-around. Rodriguezs 39.500 set a career record and ties the seventh-best single all-around score set in the nation this year. In addition, she set or tied season-high scores on vault (9.925), bars (9.825), and beam (9.85), nabbing the top podium finish on floor. Rodriguez has attacked floor with stunning consistency this season; currently she leads the nation in highest score on the exercise (9.975) and ranks sixth according to total season average. In other national rankings, Rodriguez sits 14th on vault.

Mak, a freshman who hails from Toronto, Can., trains three events and has made a dynamic impact on all three lineups for the Beavers. On Friday, Mak set a career-high 9.95 on bars and tied her personal best on beam (9.9), originally set just one week prior. She claimed first place on both apparatuses, proving to the Utes that Oregon State aims to be a contender well into the postseason. In addition, Mak added a 9.8 on floor exercise. After earning her first collegiate individual title only two weeks ago, Mak has quickly made personal victory a habit.

Both Rodriguezs and Maks performances against Utah led the Beavers to another season-high score (196.650), marking the third straight week that the team has accomplished such a feat. This weeks distinctions are firsts for both Rodriguez and Mak in their respective categories. Rodriguez previously won event specialist accolades twice, while cumulatively the Beavers have won 11 Gymnast of the Week and four Special Performance nods.
