ASU Starts Off First Tournament Of 2009 Strong

The ASU men's golf team shot an 8-over par 296 in the first round of the Big Island/ UH-Hilo Intercollegiate Invitational in Kona, Hawaii. Their strong play put them solidly in ninth place, just 15 strokes behind the University of Washington.
Sophomore Scott Pinckney (35-37), playing individually, finished with an even par 72, a mere six strokes behind the leader Rodolfo Estrada of host University of Hawaii-Hilo. This was the second best individual score of the day, tying Pinckney for 17th and putting him in great position for the second round.
Fellow sophomore James Byrne (38-35) and junior Tristan Bierenbroodspot (36-37) are tied for 24th after each shooting a 1-over par 73. Junior Knut Borsheim (39-35) is in 35th after a 2-over par 74, while sophomore Stephan Gross (36-40) ended the day with a 4-over par 76, tying him for 47th. The sixth and final player for the Sun Devils was sophomore Jesper Kennegard (44-41), who finished with a 13-over par 85.
