ASU Track & Field Signs ShaKeia Pinnick to National Letter of Intent
Feb. 4, 2009
TEMPE - ShaKeia Pinnick (Aurora, Ill.) will attend Arizona State University next fall after signing a National Letter of Intent to continue her academic and athletic careers with the Sun Devil track & field program, Kenny McDaniel, ASU's women's sprints/hurdles/relays coach announced Wednesday. The senior-to-be at Waubonsie Valley High School in Aurora, Ill., will join the program in time for the 2010 track & field season and will compete in the heptathlon among other individual and relay events.
'ShaKeia Pinnick is a very talented athlete who will compete in several events during her time at ASU,' McDaniel said. 'She's an athlete who thrives to be the very best she can. Saying no becomes a challenge to her in a positive manner because you can't tell her she can't hit a certain mark. With marks of 5,053 in the heptathlon and 58.98 in the 400m hurdles, Pinnick will step in a produce instantly for us. With several 55-point splits under her belt, she could be an explosive leg for our 4x400m relay in the near future as well. We are very pleased to have a talented athlete like ShaKeia in our program and look forward to her time in the Sun Devil track & field family.'
'I wanted to be a Sun Devil because ASU has great academics as well as a great coaching staff,' Pinnick said. 'They also have great weather and top notch facilities. I like that they were national champions and that they expect to continue that in the future. I believe that they will be able to help me get to the next level in track and field and I look forward to competing for the Sun Devils.'
Pinnick will bring an impressive resume to Tempe, including a score of 5,053 points in the heptathlon as a junior; a score that would have provisionally qualified her for the NCAA Championships. A five-time state champion and state runner-up in five more events, Pinnick also has captured two AAU National Championships, winning the heptathlon and the 400m hurdles at the 2007 meet. In her career already, she has added times of 54.88 in the 400m dash, 42.82 in the 300m hurdles and 2:12.34 in the 800m run.
At the state level, Pinnick has won titles in the 55m hurdles (2008 indoor), 200m dash (2007 indoor), 400m dash (2007 and 2008 indoor) and the 800m run (2006 indoor) while securing runner-up finishes in the 55m hurdles (2007 indoor), 300m hurdles (2006, 2007 & 2008 outdoor) and the long jump (2007 indoor). At the 2007 state indoor meet, she entered four events, winning twice and taking second twice, before being selected as the Athlete of the Meet.
The daughter of Rob and Deidre Pinnick, ShaKeia Pinnick enjoys music, signing and spending time with family and friends. She lists, among others, Bryan Clay as one of her favorite athletes 'because he proved that undersized athletes can be the best.'
