Feb. 4, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - The Oregon State baseball team received two first-place votes by Pacific-10 Conference coaches and is projected to finish fourth in 2009, the league announced Wednesday.
Oregon State received 58 total points to be projected fourth. That figure is 11 points behind Arizona State, which received three first-place votes and 69 points overall to projected as the league's champion this year. The Sun Devils are ahead of No. 2 UCLA, which received 67 points, No. 3 Stanford (64 points) and then the Beavers.
Arizona is fifth with 56 points, followed by No. 6 California (42), seventh-ranked USC (38), No. 8 Washington State (24), No. 9 Washington (23) and No. 10 Oregon (9).
It is the second straight year the Beavers have been selected by the coaches to finish fourth. Last year, Oregon State received 44 points.
Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams and points were awarded by position. First-place votes gave teams nine points, while second-place votes earned them eight points, and so on.
The Beavers are in or near the top 25 in each of the major polls this season. Oregon State is ranked 25th by Baseball America and 24th by Rivals.com. The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) has OSU at No. 31, while Collegiate Baseball, the first poll to come out this season, puts the Beavers at No. 38 to open the season. The Sporting News, which does not have a weekly poll, placed Oregon State at No. 15 in its annual baseball yearbook.
