Breaking It Down With Bailey
Feb. 4, 2009
Husky softball player Bailey Stenson will blog on GoHuskies.com throughout the 2009 season as Washington looks to make its ninth trip to the Women's College World Series. Stenson, an All-Pac-10 outfielder, led the Huskies last season with 63 hits. A leukemia survivor and self-proclaimed thumb wrestling pro, the junior is one of eight returning starters hoping to help UW win its first national championship.
Eight and a half months. Countless 300-yard shuttles. Half-gassers. Lifting weights. Mass groundballs. Hacks off a tee. Snow, ice, rain and hail. It's finally here.
All we want to do is play. We've been cooped up for far too long: inside the Dempsey, weight room and doubling up on our Under Armour.
There has been a lot of talk about this year's team. With the return of our red-shirt leaders, 10 players from the 2007 Women's College World Series squad and our amazing young talent, we're finally getting our shot to show the nation what we've got.
This team has a lot of fire and I seriously can't wait to see what this season has to offer. Everyone has great chemistry, which is awesome because we spend so much dang time together!
I definitely don't envy Coach Tarr's job of having to put together a lineup. We have so many options this year that we're going to have no problem putting nine girls on the field who are ready to compete. This last month of January practice has been one of great success. We've had a lot of fun and I believe we're ready to go to battle, especially after hitting the Confidence Course at Fort Lewis this last weekend. Look out Tennessee, we've got you first.
The team's goal this year is to play pitch by pitch, inning by inning and game by game. If we stick to that, we will have no issue being where we want to be at the end of the season...and that is to be the 'first.'
We're all anxiously awaiting to hit the field Friday. Thanks for checking out this blog!! Stay tuned for more to come!!
Stay classy and GO DAWGS!
