Arizona's Tapp and USC's Hosszu Named January's Pac-10 Swimmers of the Month

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- ARIZONA junior Jake Tapp and USC freshman Katinka Hosszu have been named the Pac-10 Swimmers of the Month for January, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Tapp won eight events for the Wildcats in the month of January, including five in Arizona's upset over top-ranked Texas. The Langley, British Columbia, native placed first in the 100 and 200 backstrokes in Arizona's victory against No. 4 California, touching in at 48.45 and 1:45.79, respectively. Against Stanford, Tapp swam the anchor leg of the 400 free relay team that placed first for the Wildcats.
This is the first monthly honor for Tapp and the second Men's Swimmer of the Month overall for Arizona.
Hosszu completed an impressive January for the Trojans that began with wins in the 200 fly and 500 free against UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 10. The Bafa, Hungary, native placed first in the 1000 free and 500 free, while finishing second in the 200 IM in USC's win over Pac-10 foe Washington on Jan. 23.
Against Califrnia on Jan. 30, Hosszu won the 1000 free with a season-best time of 9:43.61 and winning the 200 fly in 1:54.95, with a NCAA 'A' cut. She also won the 500 free, improving on her NCAA 'B' cut with a time of 4:46.81. Despite a Trojan loss to Stanford on Jan. 31, the freshman upset Olympian Elaine Breeden of Stanford in the 200 fly, lowering her NCAA 'A' time to 1:54.26. Hosszu also won the 1650 free and 500 free against the Cardinal.
Hosszu earns her first monthly honor and the fourth Women's Swimmer of the Month all-time for USC.
