Feb. 6, 2009
Palm Springs, Calif. - California improved to 2-0 on the season in a big way after defeating Liberty 15-1 (five innings) in the opening day of the Cathedral City Kickoff on Friday. The Bears defeated Houston, 10-2 in the opening game. This was the first time since 2007 that Cal had put back-to-back 10-plus run games and the first time scoring 15 runs since last season against Long Beach State.
Cal resumes action on Saturday with games against Boise State (10:30 a.m.) and Illinois (1:00 p.m.).
Freshman Jamia Reid showed why she was a 2008 EA Sports All-American in high school, after pounding out her second home run of the season to go along with two hits, two runs and three RBI against the Flames. Her twin sister Elia, got in the mix with two RBI, a hit and a run as well. Freshman Frani Echavarria also contributed a big bat with two hits and two runs.
Sophomore Valerie Arioto collected the win, her first of the season, allowing one run on three hits and seven strikeouts.
The Bears wasted little time in lighting up the scoreboard with a six-run explosion in the second inning. With three runs already on the board, Jamia Reid stepped to the plate and clocked a three-run home run down the left field line to plate Arioto and Taylor Kelly.
Cal went right back to work in the top of the third inning with three more runs in the frame. Vernae Sevilla led the inning off with her first home run of the season and first since April of last season at Stanford to give the Bears a 7-1 advantage. Echavarria then reached on an infield single, before stealing second and scoring on an Elia Reid single. Reid eventually scored on a Liberty fielding miscue.
The Bears tacked on six more runs in the fourth inning to go up 15-1. Senior Gina Leomiti provided the key hit when her double to center field plated Jamia Reid, who led off the inning with a single. Lauren Bauer (pinch hit for Echavarria) got in the mix and knocked a single to center field to score Shannon Houston, who drew a walk after Leomiti's double.
The win helped Cal improve to 3-0 all-time against Liberty.
