Cathedral City, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team outhit the Southern Illinois Salukis, 10-7, but fell 3-1 in its season opener Friday afternoon.

Senior Paige Lowe (Tustin, Calif.) led the Beaver offense going 2-for-3, while the other eight in the starting lineup all recorded hits.

Oregon State jumped onto the board early led by sophomore McKenna Lowe’s (Tustin, Calif.) single. M. Lowe stole second before advancing to third on a ground out. Sophomore Audrey Roderfeld (Vista, Calif.) drove her home on a single to center field, giving the Beavers a 1-0 advantage after one.

The Beavers continued to find their way on base throughout the  next three innings, loading the bases with no outs in the third behind junior Dani Chisholm’s (Boring, Ore.) leadoff single. M. Lowe advanced Chisholm after reaching on an error by Alicia Garza at second base. Sophomore Erin Guzy (Beaverton, Ore.) walked to load the bags up. But three straight outs closed out the inning with all runners stranded.

Senior Paige Lowe (Tustin, Calif.) got the bats swinging again in the fourth, leading off with her first hit of the season. With one out, freshman Nikki Chandler (Houston, Texas) tallied her first hit of the season on a sacrifice bunt turned single. But both were left after back-to-back tough defensive plays were made at shortstop and third base.

Southern Illinois scored all three of its runs in the sixth inning with two coming from a big one-out double by Katie Wilson. The Salukis third run came off of a squeeze play with Chelsea Petty picking up the RBI.

Oregon State had runners in scoring position in both the sixth and seventh inning, but fly balls to left field closed out both innings and the game.

Junior Kelly Dyer (Eugene, Ore.) pitched the complete game and was charged with the loss, while Southern Illinois’ Nikki Waters tallied the win.
