Feb. 6, 2009
LOS ANGELES - The USC Trojans' track and field team announced today (Feb. 6) that it has received signed National Letters of Intent from Alitta Boyd, Lauren Chambers and Reggie Wyatt, according to USC Director of Track and Field Ron Allice.
'All three of these outstanding athletes will fill key areas of need to keep the balance of our prorgram,' said Allice. 'We are not done with recruiting yet, but these are the people we have singled out for early signing.'
Wyatt, from La Sierra HS in Riverside, Calif., set the national freshman and sophomore high school records in the 300m hurdles, before running unattached as a junior after transfering schools. His freshman 300m hurdles mark is 37.42 and his sophomore standard is 35.90. Wyatt also set the sophomore record for the 400m hurdles with a time of 50.10 when he placed second at the Nike Outdoor Nationals, his third career race at that distance. He took second place in the 400m IH at the 2007 World Youth Games in the Czech Republic. Last year Wyatt clocked a time of 46.63 in a 400m race.
The signing of Lauren Chambers of Kell HS in Marietta, Ga. should continue the Trojans' long line of top-tier throwers. At least one Trojan athlete has won a Pac-10 title in a throws event in each of the last 10 seasons, with four capturing NCAA titles. USC also has a 16-year streak with at least one hammer thrower earning All-America honors. Chambers enters her senior season with the top hammer throw among high school girls of 184-9. She also has the fourth-best shot put of 49-1 1/2. She set a 16-and-under Junior Olympic record in the hammer throw of 153-8, placed third at the Junior Nationals, then competed at the World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Chambers was also the 2008 National Scholastic Indoor champion in the shot put at 49-1 1/5 and a third place finisher at the USATF Junior Natonals in the hammer.
Boyd is from Moreau HS in Hayward, Calif. and is the leading high school triple jumper with a best of 42-1 1/2. She also enters this season with the 10th best long jump of 19-6 1/2. She placed second at the CIF state championships as a junior in the triple jump with a mark of 41-3. She also placed third in the long jump at the CIF state championships with a jump of 19-4 3/4. Boyd won the triple jump at the 2008 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships with a mark of 42-0 and placed third in the long jump at 19-4 1/4.
