Chris Derrick Finishes As Runner-up At USA Cross Country Championships
Feb. 7, 2009
Derwood, Md. - Stanford freshman Chris Derrick finished as the runner-up in the junior race at the USA Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning. Derrick advanced to the World Cross Country Championships in Amman, Jordan where he will have a chance to compete for the United States.
Derrick finished the 8,000-meter race with a time of 23:39 to finish second to German Fernandez, a freshman at Oklahoma State. Fernandez finished with a winning time of 23:20. Finishing third was Oregon freshman Luke Puskedra with a time of 23:53.
The much ballyhooed trio of freshmen all will advance in the junior race to 37th IAAF World Cross Country Championships, which take place on March 28. The trio has the makings of a strong U.S. team, although it remains to be seen if all three will travel to Jordan or concentrate on their collegiate seasons.
Also competing for Stanford was freshman Kevin Havel. Havel finished 25th with a time of 25:46, but will not advance to the World Championships. Havel redshirted his initial season at Stanford, but is a former high school All-American and a big part of the future of Stanford cross country.
