Alfred Aboya Named UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week
Feb. 9, 2009
Senior center/forward Alfred Aboya (Yaounde, Cameroon/Tilton School) of the UCLA men's basketball team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Feb. 2-8.
Aboya led UCLA to two lop-sided victories last week, helping the Bruins post a 76-60 home victory over USC (Feb. 4) and an 89-63 home win over Notre Dame (Feb. 7). Aboya entered the week averaging 9.1 points and 5.3 rebounds and nearly doubled those numbers, posting averages of 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds last week. He had a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds against USC, just the second double-double of his career. The 12 rebounds tied his personal best (set earlier this year against Arizona). He later recorded 19 points and seven rebounds while shooting 9-for-12 from the field in the blowout win over Notre Dame. The 19 points was the second-highest scoring output of his career. But probably more impressive than his offensive production, was what he did on the defensive end against two of the better centers in the country. Against the Trojans, Aboya and company held Taj Gibson to two points and four rebounds, well below his season averages of 14.9 points and 10.2 rebounds. Then against the reigning Big East Player of the Year, Luke Harangody, Aboya and company held the Notre Dame star to just five points and one rebound, far below his season averages of 25.3 points and 13.2 rebounds. Harangody had several major streaks snapped in the contest against the Bruins, including a streak of 50 games in double-figure scoring, 14 games of 20 or more points and 11 consecutive double-double performances.
This is Aboya's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of his career.
