Salas Leads USC Into Second After Northrop First Day
Feb. 9, 2009
Sophomore Lizette Salas fired a 2-over 73, helping the USC women's golf team to second place during a cold, rainy and windy opening round of the 2009 Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the Palos Verdes (Calif.) G.C.
Salas is in second, three strokes back of Arizona State's Juliana Murcia (70), the only player to break par on the day. Murcia led ASU to the team lead at 21-over 305. USC is second (313) with UCLA in third (314) and Wake Forest fourth (315).
Salas, starting on the 10th tee, seemed unfazed by the low temperatures, deep gusts of wind and all around wet conditions. She opened with a 1-under on the back 9 and even a small setback on the start of the back 9 couldn't keep her from having the second-best round of the day.
Junior Stefanie Endstrasser is tied for 36th at 10-over 81 and freshman Inah Park is tied for 65th at 14-over 85.
Junior Caroline Kim, playing as an individual, is tied for 63rd at 13-over 84.
Play continues Tuesday and Wednesday (Feb. 10-11).
