THIS WEEK IN PAC-10 WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The highly anticipated matchup between #3 California and #6 Stanford for Part II of the Battle of the Bay is slated for this weekend, Saturday, Feb. 14 at Maples Pavilion and will also be televised nationally on Fox Sports Net. Not only are both battling for the top spot in the Pac-10 standings, but each has significant streaks on the line, including the Cardinal's 24-game home-court win streak, while Cal goes into the game boasting a program-record 12-game win streak.
Also on tap on the television schedule are Arizona and USC on Sunday, Feb 15 on FSN. Arizona State takes its win streak on the road, as well, traveling to UCLA and USC, while the Washington host the Oregon schools.
APPEL, WALKER MAKE WOODEN MIDSEASON CUT
Stanford's Jayne Appel and California's Ashley Walker were among the list of 20 candidates who moved onto the John R. Wooden Award Midseason watch list. Walker and Appel are two of the Pac-10's top three scorers and top four rebounders. California and Stanford are ranked in the top 10 in the nation and stand No. 1 and No. 2 in the league standings, respectively.
TWO PLAYERS NET ACADEMIC ACCOLADE
Washington State SR G Katie Appleton and Arizona State SR G Kate Englebrecht were voted to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA All-Academic District VIII teams.
A Tucson, Ariz., native, Englebrecht is a Kinesiology major, carrying a 3.75 grade point average. She earned a nod on the second team.
Named to the third team, Appleton is a movement studies major with a 3.41 GPA out of Big Bear Lake, Calif.
