Stanford Sweeps First Pac-10 Player, Pitcher Of The Week Awards
Feb. 10, 2009
Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford softball team added another accomplishment to its first week of work today, as senior pitcher Missy Penna and junior catcher Rosey Neill combined to sweep the first set of Pac-10 Player and Pitcher of the Week awards.
Penna was named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week for the fifth time in her career, while Neill earned her third career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor. Penna was honored once as a sophomore and three times last year, while Neill earned both of her previous awards last March.
Penna threw four complete games for the Cardinal over the opening weekend and posted a 3-1 record with two shutouts. She struck out 39 batters over 23 innings (nearly two per inning) and allowed just two runs and seven hits (0.61 ERA). On Saturday against Kansas, a team that had pulled two top-10 upsets in 24 hours, Penna tied the Stanford school record with her fifth career no-hitter and struck out batters for 13 of the Cardinal's 15 outs. Penna also struck out 13 batters against Texas Tech earlier in the day Saturday, and fanned nine in five innings against Wagner on Sunday.
Neill belted three home runs and hit .500 (6-for-12) for the weekend, leading Stanford to a 4-1 record and three run-rule wins. Neill's weekend was highlighted by a pair of two-run home runs in back-to-back at-bats against Texas Tech on Saturday, which fueled a 6-1 Cardinal victory. Neill added another bomb later in the day against Kansas, and finished the weekend with seven RBI and a 1.250 slugging percentage. Behind the plate, Neill recorded 42 putouts and caught the no-hitter against Kansas for Penna.
Stanford (4-1) continues the season in San Diego this week, meeting UC Santa Barbara, Long Beach State, San Diego State and Utah State in the four-day tournament.
