Bruins Finish Third at Regional Challenge
Feb. 11, 2009
The top-ranked UCLA women's golf team finished third at the 14th Annual Northrup Grumman Regional Challenge Wednesday, ending a streak of four consecutive medal play victories that began in the fall.
The Bruins posted a final round team score of 298 (+14) -- their best of the tournament -- and placed one stroke behind runner-up Wake Forest with a 54-hole score of 917 (+65). Arizona State captured first place with a three-round total of 898 (+46). USC finished fourth at 919 (+67), followed by fifth-place Denver at 929 (+18).
UCLA senior Ryann O'Toole led the Bruins in the final round with an even par 71 and finished in a tie for fourth at 225 (+12). The result was O'Toole's third Top 10 finish this season and fifth in her career. Unfortunately for UCLA, O'Toole was entered as an individual and her scores were not counted in team totals.
Senior Tiffany Joh placed seventh at 226 (+13) after carding a final round 75 (+4), followed by freshman Stephanie Kono, who finished 11th at 229 (+16) after signing for a 76 (+5). Sophomores Maria Jose Uribe and Glory Yang tied for 13th at 231 (+18). Yang posted a 73 (+2) and Uribe signed for a 74 (+3). Finally, junior Sydnee Michaels tied for 34th at 236 (+23) following a final round 77 (+6).
Arizona State's Juliana Murcia led wire-to-wire and won with a 54-hole score of 214 (+1). ASU's Carlota Ciganda tied for second place at 222 (+9).
