`Pink Zone' Just Days Away For Oregon State Women's Basketball
Feb. 11, 2009
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The 2009 'Pink Zone' event for the Oregon State women's basketball team is just around the corner. On Saturday, the Beavers will square off against Washington State at legendary Gill Coliseum, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m. PT.
That same night, fans who come to the game will have an opportunity to help fight breast cancer. The 'Pink Zone' event is being held in conjunction with more than 1,000 schools across the nation and the WBCA (Women's Basketball Coaches Association) to help bring awareness to finding a cure for breast cancer.
Fans have an opportunity to purchase an official 'Pink Zone' t-shirt from Beaver Authentics before the game, either online, at a merchandise tent outside the front doors of Gill Coliseum Saturday night or at Oregon State's game Thursday night against Washington, which also starts at 7 p.m. The shirts are $15 and entitle the wearer to free admission to the game Saturday night. A portion of the proceeds from the t-shirt will go the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, which was created by the WBCA and the late coach in December 2007. Yow is the former head coach at North Carolina State and is considered an innovator in the world of women's athletics and collegiate basketball. She passed away the morning of Jan. 24 after battling breast cancer.
Only fans who purchase the official shirt will receive free admission. Other pink shirts do not qualify.
Additionally, the first 1,000 fans through the Gill Coliseum doors will receive pink wristbands and pink eye stickers.
While at the game, fans will also have an opportunity to donate to the cause and learn more about the disease.
Last season, the Beavers participated in their first benefit game, then called 'Think Pink' and had one of the most successful events in the Pacific-10 Conference and the West Coast. Nearly 3,500 fans arrived at Gill Coliseum to support the event and watch the Beavers take on Stanford.
Oregon State returns home to Corvallis to host the Washington schools next weekend. The Beavers square off against Washington Thursday night at legendary Gill Coliseum. The game starts at 7 p.m. PT and can be heard live by tuning into KTHH 990-AM in the Corvallis area and KKAD 1550-AM in Portland. The game can also be heard live on the Internet by tuning into Beaver Nation Online (osubeavers.com) and Yahoo! Sports. Todd Mansfield will call all the action.
