Las Vegas, Nev.Falling behind early, the Oregon State softball team (3-3) rallied, but its rally came up just short as it fell 7-6 on Friday afternoon to No. 16 DePaul.

Senior Stefanie Ewing (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and junior Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.) earned the team’s only hits with Ewing picking up a pair of RBI.

In the bottom of the third, Oregon State chipped away at the 7-0 lead DePaul built early in the first two innings, scoring three runs. Junior Alana Ford (Chula Vista, Calif.) led off the inning with a walk before stealing second. Freshman Nikki Chandler (Houston, Texas) and junior Dani Chisholm (Boring, Ore.) followed with walks of their own.

Blue Demons pitcher Becca Heteniak walked in Ford and Chandler before Ewing fouled out to left field, scoring Chisholm, and cutting the lead to 7-3.

Ewing picked up another RBI in the bottom of the fifth, snapping Heteniak’s no-hitter, on an infield single to second baseman Brittney Yniguez. A throwing error by Heteniak to first base, scored senior Kellie Roberts (Stayton, Ore.), who came in to pinch run for Roderfeld, and freshman Nicole Luchanski (Edmonton, Alberta), who pinch ran for Ewing, to narrow the gap to only one run after five full.

In the bottom of the seventh, Ewing reached on a two-out walk before senior Cristy Hatton (Tigard, Ore.) entered the game to pinch run. Hatton moved into scoring position on a wild pitch, but a strikeout closed out the game with the Beavers just coming up short.

Freshman Paige Hall (Portland, Ore.) was charged with the complete game loss, making her record now 1-1.

DePaul’s Heteniak led the Blue Demons offensively, going 3-for-4 with a double and a home run. She also pitched the complete game, improving to 1-0 on the season.

The Beavers face Utah and UC Davis in day two of the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic on Saturday. Game times are set for 1:30 and 6:00 p.m.

Oregon State NotesSenior Stefanie Ewing extends her hitting streak to six games, two shy of her career longest.
