Washington's Depth Keys 4-3 Win Over Marshall
Feb. 14, 2009
MINNEAPOLIS - The Husky women's tennis team survived a difficult road test against 44th-ranked Marshall thanks to something they had not been able to rely on until this season: singles depth. The 36th-ranked Huskies (5-1) defeated the Thundering Herd 4-3 in a neutral court match at the University of Minnesota, with their fourth, fifth, and sixth singles players earning straight-set wins.
The two Top-50 teams met at Minnesota's Baseline Tennis Center, as the Huskies will take on the Golden Gophers on Sunday before returning home. Washington started the match with one of its most convincing doubles wins over the year, sweeping every match with ease, and the point proved to be decisive as the teams split singles play. In the No. 1 doubles match, 47th-ranked duo Venise Chan and Denise Dy knocked off 44th-ranked pair, Kellie Schmitt and Karolina Soor, 8-5.
Junior Aleksandra Malovic gave the Huskies their first point in singles play, defeating Catherine Kellner, 7-5, 6-2 at the No. 6 position. However, Marshall's Schmitt, ranked 33rd in singles, handed 81st-ranked Chan her first dual match loss, 6-4, 6-3 at the top singles spot. Sophomore Lina Xu also came up short against Soor at third singles, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
With the match tied at 2-2, freshman Samantha Smith overcame Deanna Bailey at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-4, then junior Joyce Ardies ended Marshall's hopes with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Jessica Keener at fifth singles. After the match was clinched, Dy fell short in a match that went the distance, losing to Isabell Raich, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (4).
Today marked the first match that Washington had won when Chan was unable to win at No. 1 singles, a testament to the strength of the lineup as a whole.
Washington will have another battle in store on Sunday, as the 66th-ranked Golden Gophers also defeated Marshall by a 4-3 count on Friday. The match marks the end of a six-match stint away from home for the Huskies. The UW is 4-1 so far, having visited the states of Utah, California, and now Minnesota.
