Feb. 15, 2009
Chapel Hill, N.C. - Junior Marissa Drewrey was one out away from a no-hitter, but settled for a one-hit shutout as ninth-ranked Cal earned a 4-0 win over Penn State in the final day of the Carolina Classic on Sunday.
With its second shutout of the season, Cal has now outscored its opponents 65-16. The Bears (7-1) play their first home game of the season against Santa Clara on Feb. 18 at 3:00 p.m., before returning to Palm Springs in the Cathedral City Classic, Feb. 20-22.
For Drewrey, this was her third straight outing with eight or more strikeouts (9) to improve to 5-1 on the season.
Meanwhile Jamia Reid continued to display her power from the plate, launching her fifth home run of the season. She is hitting .429 this season and leads Cal with the five home runs and 12 runs and 13 RBI. She is also 9-for-9 in steals. Her twin sister Elia is hitting .478 and is 13-for-14 in steals.
Jamia Reid was the catalyst in the first inning for the Bears when she singled, stole second and then scored courtesy of Gina Leomiti's single down the right field line on a 3-1 pitch, giving Cal the early 1-0 lead.
Two innings later, Elia Reid helped Cal take a 2-0 lead. After drawing a leadoff walk, the speedster then stole second and third base. With the bases loaded and two outs, Valerie Arioto drew a walk allowing for Elia Reid to cross the plate.
Cal widened the gap in the fifth inning with two more runs to take a 4-0 lead. Jamia Reid went right back to work with a leadoff home run over the left field wall on the very first pitch. Two batters later, Vernae Sevilla singled to center field. Nikki Schrey was then inserted as a pinch runner for Sevilla and advanced to second base after Bernice Masaniai reached on a fielding miscue. Two batters later and Schrey on third, Sanoe Kekahuna connected on a pitch deep enough to center field, allowing Schrey to score on the sacrifice.
