Feb. 15, 2009
HENDERSON, Nev. - The fourth-ranked Bruins concluded their run at the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic with four more home runs on Sunday against South Dakota State, including a pair by sophomore Monica Harrison, as UCLA defeated the Jackrabbits 12-0 in five innings. The Bruins hit 15 home runs in their five games this weekend. Senior Amanda Kamekona and junior Julie Burney also went deep on Sunday.
The Bruins improve to 7-2 on the season, while the Jackrabbits fall to 1-7.
UCLA continued its home run derby weekend, belting two in the first, both on 3-2 pitches. Kamekona led off the inning with her second homer of the season to straightaway center to put the Bruins up 1-0. UCLA then loaded the bases on a single up the middle by sophomore Katie Schroeder and walks to sophomore GiOnna DiSalvatore and junior Kaila Shull. With two outs and another 3-2 count, Burney launched one to the deepest part of Stephanie Lynn Craig Park Field 3 in straightaway center for her first career grand slam and second jack of the season to make it 5-0.
The Bruins hit their third home run of the game to lead off the bottom of the second as Harrison went deep to left for her second of the year. One out later, Schroeder walked and moved to third on a single up the middle by DiSalvatore. Junior Megan Langenfeld followed with a base hit through the right side, which took a bad hop on right fielder Greta Stroh, going all the way to the wall. Both Schroeder and DiSalvatore scored as Langenfeld wound up with a two-run triple.
Harrison hit her second home run in as many at-bats in the third to put the Bruins up 12-0. Burney and freshman Marti Reed had back-to-back singles to left to start the inning and Harrison sent one out to right for her third bomb of the year.
Sophomore Donna Kerr was in complete control in the circle, retiring the first nine batters and allowing only two hits and two walks in five innings to improve to 4-2 on the year. Burney and Harrison each had two hits and four RBI for the Bruins.
Jenna Marston started for the Jackrabbits and allowed nine runs, six hits and three walks in two innings with two strikeouts. Pam Nicholson tossed the last two frames and gave up three runs and three hits.
