Jayne Appel Earns Fourth U.S. Bank Player Of The Week Honor Of The Season
Feb. 16, 2009
For the fourth time this season, No. 4/5 Stanford's Jayne Appel has been named the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player of the Week, the conference announced Monday. Appel earned the honor after posting her 10th double-double of the season with 22 points and 14 rebounds in Stanford's 58-41 victory over then-No. 3/3 California Saturday night.
The win pulled Stanford even with California atop the Pac-10 standings at 11-1.
Appel shot 70.0 percent (7-for-10) from the field in Saturday's win while also blocking a pair of shots on defense. The junior from Pleasant Hill, Calif. played a key role in Stanford's game-changing surge in the second half, scoring the first six points to spearhead a 30-4 run that erased a 30-20 California lead. Appel scored 14 points over that stretch, and 17 points overall in the second half.
Additionally, Appel went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line in the contest, including a 7-for-8 showing in the second half, to provide another boon to the Cardinal scoring effort.
Monday's honor is the fourth of this season and seventh overall for Appel.
Stanford (20-4, 11-1 Pac-10) continues play this weekend, hosting Oregon State at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, and Oregon for a 2 p.m. contest Saturday, Feb. 21.
