This Week In Pac-10 Men's Basketball
Feb. 16, 2009
With a home sweep of the Oregon schools last week, WASHINGTON moves into sole possession of first place in the Pac-10 standings, one game ahead of ARIZONA STATE. However, the Huskies have a tough road trip ahead this week at UCLA and USC. Meanwhile, the Sun Devils, winners of their last four and the league's first to post 20 wins, will host the league's hottest team in ARIZONA, winners of seven straight... The Conference is 92-29 (.760) in non-league play this season... This week's Top 25 rankings include ARIZONA STATE (No. 14 AP/No. t11 ESPN/USA Today) UCLA (No. 20/No. 15), and WASHINGTON (No. 22/No. 19).

Around the league... During its seven game win streak, ARIZONA has cranked up the offensive productivity by averaging 82.6 points per game in that span. Junior F Chase Budinger has averaged 20.4 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game over the last seven games. Arizona has won six straight league games for the first time since winning seven straight during the 2004-05 season. Aside from the 'Big Three' of Chase Budinger, Jordan Hill and Nic Wise, how key is it for Arizona to have a fourth player score in double figures? Arizona is 9-1 this season when someone besides that trio scores in double digits... ARIZONA STATE became the first Pac-10 team to reach 20 wins this season. It's the first time the Sun Devils have posted back-to-back 20 win seasons since 1980 (22-7) and 1981 (24-4). Over the last two seasons, Arizona State has won 18 of its last 31 Pac-10 games (Only UCLA has won more league games in that span with 24). It won a total of 18 league games in the previous four years combined (2004-07). Junior G Derek Glasser averaged 16.5 points and 5.0 assists in the sweep over the Los Angeles schools. He tied for team-high honors with 15 against UCLA, then posted a team and career-high 18 points vs. USC... CALIFORNIA junior G Jerome Randle helped the Bears snap a four-game losing streak to Stanford with 18 points, eight assists and seven rebounds in the 82-75 win over the Cardinal. Freshman G Jorge Gutierrez, who had been averaging 17.2 minutes of action per game, played 30 minutes in the win while posting career-high numbers of 10 points, eight rebounds and five steals (most by a Cal player since 2005). The Bears need one win to post their first 20-win season since 2005-06. It would be coach Mike Montgomery's 11th consecutive season with 20 or more wins... OREGON junior G Tajuan Porter scored 27 of his game-high 33 points against Washington in the second half. Porter hit 6-of-13 from three-point range giving him 264 career three-pointers. That ranks seventh on the Pac-10's all-time list and just 19 away from becoming Oregon's career leader. Looking to snap a 13-game skid, the Ducks take on California Thursday and have knocked off the Bears in four of the last five meetings at Mac Court... OREGON STATE posted its third road win in league play this season with the 54-52 win at Washington State. The last time the Beavers won three road games in Pac-10 play came during the 2002-03 season when they went 3-6 on the road. The last time they posted more than three road wins in Pac-10 play was during the 1992-93 season when they were 4-5 on the road... With the win over Cal State Bakersfield last Tuesday, STANFORD assured itself of finishing the regular season with a winning record for the 16th consecutive season. Among Pac-10 teams, only Arizona has a longer such streak with 25. Junior F Landry Fields is shooting 20-of-27 (.741) from the field over the last three games, averaging 16.0 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists during that stretch of games played... UCLA has dropped three consecutive road games for the first time since the 2003-04 season. Senior G Darren Collison scored a season-high 26 points at Arizona, hitting a career-high six three-pointers. Junior F Nikola Dragovic is shooting 30-of-66 (.455) from three-point range in Pac-10 play. Since elevated to a starter at USC (Jan. 11), he's hitting 28-of-58 (.483) from long range. The Bruins need one win to post their 45th 20-win season in school history... Despite dropping a pair of road games last week in Arizona, USC freshman F DeMar DeRozan posted solid numbers, shooting 14-of-28 (.500) from the field to average 18.0 points and post 9.0 rebounds. Over the last 15 games, DeRozan is averaging 14.9 points and 6.3 rebounds. Junior G Dwight Lewis tallied a career-high six three-pointers (6-of-9) at Arizona State. In fact, 11 of his 20 three-pointers in Pac-10 play this season have come against the Sun Devils, as he was 5-of-8 from beyond the arc in the team's previous meeting (Jan. 15). Quite a contrast from his first five meetings with Arizona State when he shot a combined 3-of-18 (.167) from beyond the arc... Currently sitting atop the league standings with a 10-3 record, WASHINGTON will post its first winning record in league play since 2006 (13-5). The next win will give the Huskies their third 20-win season in the last five years. Senior G Justin Dentmon shot 16-of-24 (.667) from the field, including 10-of-14 (.714) from three-point range to average 24.5 points in the home sweep over the Oregon schools. The Huskies had four players each score 20 or more points in their 103-84 win over Oregon (Isaiah Thomas - 24, Jon Brockman - 21, Dentmon - 21, Quincy Pondexter - 20)... WASHINGTON STATE freshman F Klay Thompson continues to pace the Cougars in scoring (13.3 ppg). He shot 17-of 32 (.531) from the field and 9-of-15 (.600) from three-point range last week to average 22.5 points. He's led the team in scoring in five of the last seven games, averaging 18.4 ppg over the last seven contests. It's helped that he's shot a blistering 27-of-45 (.600) from beyond the arc during that stretch.
