Bruins Sunk In Seattle

Seattle, WA--- UCLA (15-9, 6-7) dropped a 59-49 decision at the University of Washington (6-18, 2-12) on Friday night in Seattle. The Bruins, playing without injured leading scorer Doreena Campbell, shot just 29.8% from the field.

Washington jumped out a 11-6 lead in the early going, taking advantage of 10 UCLA turnovers in the first eight-plus minutes of action. Sophomore guard Darxia Morris scored two quick baskets for UCLA to narrow the margin to 11-10 at the 9:50 mark. The Huskies held the lead the rest of the half and took a 27-19 edge into the locker room after an off-balance eight-foot shot by freshman guard Krista Kingma banked in with two seconds remaining on the clock. UCLA finished the half with 17 turnovers. Morris and freshman guard Atonye Nyingifa each had six points for the Bruins at the break.

The Huskies moved out to a 37-26 at the 13:30 mark on a Laura McLellan basket and a free throw. The Huskies went on to take its largest lead of the game at 41-27 at the 11:49 mark. The Bruins climbed back in the contest by scoring six straight points to close to within 50-45 with 4:12 on the clock after a basket by Morris following a steal by sophomore forward Nina Earl. UCLA had a chance to slice into the lead even more after another steal by Earl but turned it over and Washington began a run of its own.

Washington, which snapped a 12-game losing streak, answered back with eight straight points, six from the free throw line, to build the lead up to 58-45 with 1:21 to play. The Huskies shot 41% in the game and forced 23 Bruin turnovers.

Nyingifa scored a career-best 14 points to lead UCLA. She also led the team with 10 rebounds, which matches her career-best, to record her first double-double as a Bruin. Morris joined her in double figure scoring with 13 points.

UCLA played tonight without leading scorer Doreena Campbell. The Bruin sophomore guard has been experiencing blurred vision after suffering a blow to the face during a drill in practice on Wednesday.UCLA will play at Washington State on Sunday at 1 p.m. before returning home to meet Stanford on Feb. 27 in Pauley Pavilion.
