Cats Romp in Invitational Opener over NDSU

TUCSON--Arizona's 12-hit outburst and a big fourth inning pushed the No. 11-ranked Wildcats to a 10-0 run-rule victory over North Dakota State in the club's Wildcat Invitational tournament Friday at Hillenbrand Stadium.
UA scored out of the gate in its home opener, putting up a run in the first with an RBI single by Stacie Chambers, added a run-scoring triple by Brittany Lastrapes to fuel a three-run third, and then put up a six-spot in the fourth keyed by a three-run homer from Laine Roth.
Junior pitcher Sarah Akamine two-hit the Bisons, giving up singles to Laurel Pipkin and Elisa Victa in the fourth inning of the five-frame game. Akamine improved to 5-0.
Arizona improved to 8-2 on the season and pinned a first loss on the Bisons, who earlier beat Utah, 4-2. Arizona and Utah meet in the tourney's final game Friday night.
UA third baseman Jenae Leles left the game in the fourth inning after getting hit in the head during the in-between-innings warmup on a throw to second by catcher Chambers. She was replaced for the final two innings by freshman Alicia Banks.
Lauren Schutzler scored three runs and drove in three for UA, while Lastrapes added a double and a pair of runs.Game 1 - North Dakota State 4, Utah 2
TUCSON--North Dakota State stayed unbeaten with a first-inning rally that brought three unearned runs across to beat Utah 4-2 Friday afternoon in opening action of the Wildcat Invitational hosted by the University of Arizona.
Andi Padilla (5-0) scattered six hits in the complete-game victory for the Bison (6-0), who were to play Arizona immediately following.
Utah (7-4) saw its four-game winning streak come to an end.
Utah took a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out double by Sharee Fonoti that dropped into left after Kara Foster walked, stole second and moved to third on a groundout. But the Bisons answered.
North Dakota State loaded the bases in the bottom of the first with two outs, after successive walks issued by Utah pitcher Brittainy Parker, and then tied the game on a soft roller mishandled by Parker. Break Konz followed with an RBI single past third. Taylor Lynn drew another walk to force in Richel Briones for a third unearned run. Nicole Rivera struck out to strand three runners.
NDSU added another run in the third with a walk by Kelly Cantrell that chased Parker, a single by Briones, a sac bunt by Jackie Currie and an infield bunt single by Lynn to drive in Cantrell.
The Utes added a run with a one-out solo home run by Foster in the seventh, her fifth of the year.
Parker (0-1) took the loss in her second start of the year.
