No. 7 Stanford Overpowers No. 15 Pepperdine 6-1
Feb. 20, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. - The seventh-ranked Stanford men's tennis team captured its sixth win of the season today, defeating No.15 Pepperdine 6-1 at Taube Tennis Stadium. The Cardinal dominated the Waves, surrendering only one doubles and one singles match.
Stanford jumped out to a 1-0 lead by capturing the doubles point. Sophomore Ted Kelly stepped in to team up with freshman Bradley Klahn at the No. 3 position, providing the first win for the Cardinal as they defeated Hugh Clark and Alex Llompart, 8-5. Not long after, the pair of freshman Ryan Thacher and senior Matt Bruch clinched the point with a victory at the No. 2 spot over Mahmoud Kamel and Alejandro Moreno, 8-2.
'It felt good to finally get the doubles point,' said head coach John Whitlinger. 'It was also great to play outside for once. We haven't played any outdoor tennis this season with the exception of our match against Sacramento State, so it was good to see us play well outside.'
Stanford then took three straight-set victories to triumph over Pepperdine. Thacher and No. 13 sophomore Alex Clayton quickly made it 3-0, and senior Blake Muller solidified the win by defeating the Waves' Jensen Turner, 6-0, 6-4.
No. 117 junior Richard Wire made it 5-0 with his 6-4, 7-6 victory, and blanked his opponent Kamel in the second-set tiebreaker. Pepperdines' No. 44 Bassam Beidas ensured the Waves would not be shutout though, as he defeated No. 47 Klahn in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (6). Bruch closed out the day with an upset victory over No. 114 Alex Llompart, 7-6(4), 6-2.
'Pepperdine is a great team, and [head coach] Adam Steinberg does a great job with them,' said Whitlinger. 'They came out very energetic like they always do, but I think our guys had this match circled on their calendars after losing to them last year in the NCAAs. I'm very pleased with our effort today and I'm happy for the guys. We have to now turn around and get ready for a very good Cal team tomorrow.'
The Cardinal return to action tomorrow in Berkeley, Calif., where it will take on No. 23 California at 1 p.m.
