Washington Tennis Hammers Oregon, 7-0

Feb. 20, 2009

SEATTLE - The Washington men's tennis team downed the Oregon Ducks, 7-0, this evening at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, winning every set in singles and doubles. The Huskies (6-3) have now won 10 straight matches against the Ducks (6-5).

After sweeping the doubles point, the Huskies came out clicking in singles play. 31st-ranked sophomore Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan defeated Marcos Verdasco, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles to extend his win streak to five matches. Senior Patrik Fischer scored a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Alexander Cornelissen at second singles, and sophomore Martin Kildahl improved to 7-2 in singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Jose' Izquierdo at the third slot.

In the lower half of the lineup, junior Derek Drabble got back in the win column today with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ayrton Wibowo in the No. 4 match. Senior David Chu provided the match-clincher, as his 6-4, 6-1 win over Ric Mortera at fifth singles gave UW a 4-0 cushion. And in the No. 6 position, sophomore Brad Bator got the first singles start, and first dual singles victory of his career, as he coasted past Duncan MacDonald-Korth, 6-2, 6-2.

Bator, hailing from Bothell, Wash. and a product of Inglemoor High School, is the first Washington state native to win a dual match for the Huskies since Chris Floyd in 2005.

'That was fantastic for Brad to not only get his first singles start but also his first win,' said head coach Matt Anger. 'That is something that has been coming a long time for him, as he has been building and improving and getting ready for this.'

The Huskies took the early 1-0 lead by virtue of their doubles play. Drabble and Fischer raced to an 8-2 win at No. 2 doubles over Mortera and MacDonald-Korth. Kildahl and Nedunchezhiyan clinched the point with an 8-5 win at the top doubles match. Bator and sophomore Tobi Obenaus then completed the sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 3 doubles against Wibowo and Izquierdo.

Washington next has a pivotal non-conference match on Sunday at 2 p.m. against 42nd-ranked Fresno State at the Nordstrom.
