Baseball Puts 14 Runs On Tennessee In Win
Feb. 21, 2009
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Oregon State baseball team came out in the second game of a three-game series at Tennessee Saturday, posting eight runs in the ninth for a 14-4 rout of the host Volunteers at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Ryan Ortiz was 3-for-6 to lead the 13-hit Beaver attack, which saw Stefen Romero hit his first career home run and drive in three and Joey Wong finish with two hits for the second straight game. After being down 3-0 after the first four innings, the Beavers came on strong, outscoring Tennessee, 14-1, the rest of the way, posting at least one run in each of the last five innings.
'This was a very good offensive day,' head coach Pat Casey said. 'The runs came late, but they came, and supported good outings from Tyler (Waldron) and Jorge (Reyes).
Waldron started the game and went five innings, allowing six hits and three runs in his first Oregon State start. He did not get the decision, however, as Jorge Reyes came on the sixth and proceeded to go three innings, scattering four hits and a run. He struck out three to get his first win of the season.
Romero got Oregon State (1-1 overall) on the board in the fifth, hitting a home run off Tennessee (1-1) starter Bryan Morgado. That put the Beavers down by just two, 3-1, setting the table for the club to tie the game in the sixth. With two outs, Romero stepped to the plate again in the sixth and drove a pitch down to right field, scoring Ortiz and Adalberto Santos.
Santos gave OSU the lead for the first time in the seventh on a sac fly to left, only to see Tennessee tie the game in the bottom half of the frame on a solo home run by Kentrail Davis.
Brett Casey, who had pinch hit for Blake Gibbs earlier in the game, gave the Beavers the lead for good in the eighth. He singled home John Wallace, who had walked to start the inning and then stole second base. Two batters later, Casey scored when John Tommasini singled to center.
The Beavers gave themselves eight more insurance runs in the ninth on the strength of three hits and two Tennessee errors.
Both of Romero's hits went for extra bases to pace the Beavers, while all three of Ortiz's hits were singles. Carter Bell posted his first career hit, a double to center to begin the seventh inning. Santos, Casey and Tommasini all finished with two RBI in the win.
Joey Rosas took the loss for Tennessee after working 2/3 of an inning. He allowed two hits and two runs while striking out two.
Sunday's series finale starts at 9 a.m. PT, with Greg Peavey making his first start of the season for the Beavers. Catch the game live on the Beaver Sports Network and Beaver Nation Online (osubeavers.com).
