Eugene, Ore. - The No. 59 (ITA) Washington State University women's tennis team traveled to Eugene, Ore. to take on No. 38 (ITA) Ohio State Saturday, but ended up falling to the Buckeyes, 5-2.
Ohio State jumped out to the early lead as they won two of three doubles matches, clinching the opening point.
Teammates Aleksandra Cekic and Ekaterina Kamendova picked up the lone doubles win for the Cougars, upending Angela Dipastina and Christina Keesy, 8-0, at No. 1. Ioana Oprea and Elisabeth Fournier went head-to-head with Cami Hubbs and Julie Blackmore at No. 2 doubles, but ended up falling 8-5. Ohio State's pairing of Kristin Flower and Paloma Escobedo posted a victory over Bianca Selaru and Marina Nicolas, 8-5, at the third slot.
In singles action, the Cougars played tough at all six slots, but were only able to earn two victories. At No. 4, Oprea found herself up early after winning the first-set, but her opponent DiPastina, battled back to earn a victory in the second. Oprea proved to be too much for Dipastina winning the third-set en route to a, 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 triumph.
Nicolas earned the second victory for the Cougars downing Julie Blackmore in a three-set marathon, 7-5, 4-6, 10-6. With the victory, Nicolas pushed her season record to 10-7.
Up next, the Cougars will take on Stanford and California in the first Pac-10 matches of the season. WSU will take on Stanford Friday, Feb. 27, at Stanford, Calif. Then WSU will head to Berkeley, Calif. Saturday, Feb. 28, to take on California.
