Kansas Rallies to Defeat No. 9 Cal, 3-2
Feb. 22, 2009
Palm Springs, Calif. - The Kansas Jayhawks rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat ninth-ranked Cal, 3-2 in eight innings in the final day of the Cathedral City Classic on Sunday.
Cal (11-2) resumes action in Southern California next weekend in the Demarini Tournament hosted by CS Fullerton, Feb. 27-Mar. 1.
The loss snapped Cal's six-game winning streak.
Cal built an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning thanks to Valerie Arioto's leadoff home run - her third in five games. Gina Leomiti kept the inning alive with two outs with a single through the left side, followed by a Vernae Sevilla walk. Sanoe Kekahuna delivered single with two strikes through the left side to plate Leomiti.
KU trimmed the deficit in the bottom half of the first when Allie Clark doubled with two outs to plate Stevie Crisosto.
The Jayhawks eventually tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third inning when Amanda Jobe doubled with two outs to score Clark from second.
The Bears could not generate much offense after that point as the game moved to extra innings. Cal had the first crack to take the lead with the tournament tiebreaker rule in place - runner placed on second to start the inning. However, Cal could not advance Shannon Thomas past third base as KU pitcher Val George induced a pop up to end the top half of the eighth.
Clark delivered another big hit for KU in the bottom of the eighth with a single to left field on an 0-2 pitch to score Dougie McCauley.
