USC Women Sweep Away Washington With 77-43 Road Win
Feb. 22, 2009
SEATTLE, WASH. - The USC women's basketball team completed an important road sweep with today's 77-53 win over host Washington. Three Women of Troy wound up in double figures on the day, led by 13 points from senior Brynn Cameron along with 12 from Nadia Parker and 11 from Briana Gilbreath. USC improves to 14-11 overall and is 8-6 now in Pac-10 play. Washington moves to 6-19, 2-13.
The USC defense held Washington to a 24-percent shooting effort in the first half, while the Trojans hit at a 35-percent effort from the floor. USC pieced together an 11-0 run to build a strong lead late in the first, though Washington did follow with a 6-0 answering stretch to put USC at a 31-19 lead going into halftime. In the second, USC upped its shooting to 50 percent to finish out the game at a 43-percent clip. Washington closed down at just under 30 percent from the floor and had no players finish in double digits aside from 10 rebounds from Christina Rozier.
USC wrapped two 7-0 runs around a lone bucket from the Huskies to open the game. Camille LeNoir's first points of the game came on a 3-pointer with 11:51 on the clock, lifting the Women of Troy ahead 14-2. Some smooth ball movement later in the half led to a jumper from Briana Gilbreath and a 20-9 USC lead with 8 minutes to go. Washington managed back-to-back buckets in the paint to make it 20-13 USC with 6:25 remaining in the first, but the Trojans answered with a pair of assists from LeNoir that led to a three from Heather Oliver and a three-point play from Gilbreath to lift USC up 26-13. Nadia Parker took her second charge of the half soon after, and wound up dumping in another putback at the 4-minute mark for a 28-13 USC advantage. Oliver nailed her second three next, but Washington manufactured a string of scores before the break to leave USC ahead 31-19 at halftime.
Washington cut the USC lead to seven thanks to a pair of threes from Kristi Kingma, but USC responded to the call and pushed back out ahead 45-32 on a 3-pointer from Ashley Corral with 12:00 on the clock. Corral made it a Washington-native-connection when she hit fellow Washingtonian Parker down low for a score that Cameron soon followed by burying her second three of the day to take USC up 50-32 with 10:12 to go. Cameron had started that Trojan scoring run with a bucket at 13:00. But 9:05, the run was out to 12 straight as USC took a 20-point lead on a putback from Hailey Dunham. Cameron's third 3-pointer carried the Trojans to a 67-44 lead and Oliver made it 71-44 with a take at 4:15.
USC now returns home to the Galen Center for games against the Pac-10 leaders. The Trojans will first host California in a 7 p.m. game on Friday (Feb. 27) and then faces Stanford at 12 p.m. on Sunday (March 1). USC will honor its four graduating seniors on Sunday in the final regular-season home game for Nicole Berberet, Brynn Cameron, Camille LeNoir and Nadia Parker.
- Ashley Corral now holds the seventh most 3-pointers made in a single season, having made 44 so far in her freshman season.
