Stefen Romeron drove in three and Ryan Ortiz posted six hits and two RBI as the Beavers defeated Tennessee, 14-4, in the second game of the series on Saturday. The Beavers, down 3-0, outscored the Volunteers 14-1 the rest of the way. Romero began the Beavers' scoring with a solo home run in the fifth, the team's first round-tripper of the year.
Ortiz On Track Early
Ryan Ortiz has picked up where he left off last season. The junior catcher has four hits through the first two games and has driven in three runs in the first two games combined.
And There's Wong
Joey Wong has been quietly solid at the top of the lineup. And it's easy to say quiet because all he has done is collect four hits. Amazingly, he hasn't scored and hasn't driven in a run in the two games. Of course, that will come.
Brett Casey made his first appearance of the season on Saturday and made it count, driving in two runs and scoring twice while going 1-for-2.
Ortiz Preseason All-American
Last week, Ryan Ortiz was named a preseason Third-Team All-American by Baseball America.
Notes Of Importance
Of the 14 hits last Saturday, nine were by different players. And of the 13 RBI collected, seven players accounted for them.
Carter Bell became the most recent OSU player to get his first career hit. He did so with a double on Saturday.
The game Thursday marks the second straight weekend Oregon State will play an opponent for the first time. The Beavers have never played Northern Illinois.
The trip to Arizona marks the fifth straight year the Beavers will play a preseason tournament at Arizona State. Last year, the Beavers went 1-2 at Packard Stadium in the preseason.
Oregon State relievers had just two inherited runners in the two games against Tennessee. Both were given to Kraig Sitton and both were left on base.
