Bruin Freshmen Hopfner-Hibbs and Zamarripa Light Up Contest in the Plains, Claim Pac-10 Weekly Gymnastics Accolades
Feb. 24, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- UCLA freshman Elyse Hopfner-Hibbs won the all-around for the second consecutive meet, scoring 39.475 against No. 12 Nebraska on Sunday. Meanwhile, classmate Vanessa Zamarripa earned her second consecutive perfect 10 on vault. The performances merit the underclassmen Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week and Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week, respectively, for the week of February 17-23, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Hopfner-Hibbs led the Bruins to a 196.125 team score on the weekend. The Toronto, ON, native recorded scores of 9.8 or better on all four events, including a career-high 9.95 on vault to tie for second place. She also tied for second on floor (9.875) and tied for third on bars (9.85). Hopfner-Hibbs has hit 21 consecutive routines with scores of 9.775 or better, including 15 marks of 9.85 or better in that streak. She has captured all-around titles in three meets this season. Furthermore, Hopfner-Hibbs ranks first on the UCLA roster with 19 top-three finishes and second on the team with eight individual victories.
In just one-half of one season, Zamarripa has elevated her gymnastics to mastery; in seven contests on the year, the O’Fallon, Ill., native has scored a perfect 10 on vault on three occasions. The feat gives Zamarripa the national lead in perfect scores attained in 2009. She remains the only gymnast in the country to score a 10.0 on vault this year, as well as the only gymnast to score multiple 10.0s on the same event. She currently ranks first in the nation with a Regional Qualifying Score of 9.94 and has a team-high five vault wins on the year. Zamarripa’s performance at Nebraska helped UCLA record a national-best 49.575 on the event, a score that ranks as the sixth-best team total in school history.
The Gymnast of the Week nod is Hopfner-Hibbs’s second this season and UCLA’s 25th all-time. Zamarripa has claimed three of UCLA’s four Performance of the Week nods this year. This week’s Bruin sweep marks the second time UCLA gymnasts have claimed both awards in one week.
