Feb. 24, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. - The No. 5 Stanford men's tennis team picked up its ninth win of the season this afternoon, shutting out Saint Mary's 7-0 at Taube Tennis Stadium.
The Cardinal picked up the doubles point to start things off, surrendering only the No. 3 doubles match, which was the last of the three to finish up. The No. 28-ranked pair of junior Richard Wire and senior Blake Muller picked up its second win at the No. 1 position while at No. 2, sophomore Ted Kelly and his partner freshman Bradley Klahn improved to 2-1 in dual matches.
In singles, head coach John Whitlinger tinkered with the usual lineup, and his move proved successful as Stanford captured all six singles matches. No. 117 Wire stepped into No. 3 doubles and won convincingly over Maxime Olivan, 6-2, 6-3, while Blake Muller moved into the No. 4 spot and took a hard-fought victory over Gavin Leon, 7-6(5), 7-6(5) to finish the day's competition.
No. 47 Klahn won his second match in a row, taking down Achim Christner 7-5, 6-1, and No. 13 Clayton battled back from a second-set loss to overtake Lucas Tirelli in a third-set tiebreaker, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0(7).
Sophomore Greg Hirshman played his first match at No. 5 singles and was victorious over Andrea Zannoni, 6-3, 6-3, and in his dual match singles debut of the season, sophomore Ted Kelly defeated Serif Hamdy, 6-4, 6-2.
'It was a nice win for us,' said Whitlinger. 'Everyone who played out of their normal position, and those who played today that don't always see a lot of time did a tremendous job.'
'Now we have to ready ourselves for this weekend. It's going to be a heck of a week for college tennis with the No. 4, 5, and 7 teams going up against one another.'
Stanford travels to Los Angeles on Thursday for weekend matches against No. 4 USC and No. 7 UCLA. The Cardinal will square off against the Trojans first on Friday, Feb. 27 at 1:30 p.m., followed by a match against UCLA on Saturday at 1 p.m.
