FINAL RESULTS

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Junior Lauren Archer fired a 3-under-par 69 in the final round Tuesday to help the Oregon State women’s golf team shoot an 8-over-par 296, its best round of the three-day Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Classic to finish in a tie for 10th in the 43-team field.

Oregon State shot a 54-hole total of 924, shooting rounds of 319, 309 and 296 to tie for the 10th-place finish.

“We played much better today. I am very proud of the team for hanging in there after how we started this tournament,” head coach Rise Lakowske said. “We improved each day building confidence for the next. We realized today what we are capable of and hopefully we can build on that for the rest of the spring.”

Each round the Beavers improved considerably. After the first day the Beavers were in a tie for 22nd shooting a 319 at Cougar Point. In round two Oregon State cut 10 strokes at the Oak Point course shooting a 309 moving them into a tie for 18th. In the final round the Beavers played Cougar Point again and shaved an additional 13 strokes after shooting a 296 vaulting them up eight more spots to finish tied for 10th place.

“After we shot the 319 we had a long meeting and the players set some goals for themselves,” Lakowske said. “They stuck to their goals, they played smarter, they managed the course better, they stuck to the game-plan and the results came. I am proud of them for that.”

Sophomore Cara Freeman was the Beavers’ best individual performer finishing tied for 20th-place in the 215-player field with a score of 226. Freeman ended the tournament with an even-par, 72, to accompany a pair of 5-over-par, 77’s, in the first two round.

“Cara’s iron play was really good throughout the tournament, particularly today,” Lakowske said. “Take away a couple shots that ended up out-of-bounds and she is right in that top group.”

Archer started the day in a tie for 109th before launching 72 positions to a tie for 37th with a final score of 230 (80-81-69). Archer’s final round 3-under-par, 69, was the best round by a Beaver this year.

“Lauren came out and had a great day. I was proud of how she stuck with it after her first two rounds not going the way we had hoped. She played very steady and very smart today and put up a great score.”

Freshman Elyse Okada finished tied for 48th with a 232, senior Martha Burkard tied for 81st-place shooting a 237 and freshman Whitney French shot a 243, finishing tied for 124th-place.

Splitting the individual title is Nicole Forshner of Central Arkansas and Sinead O’Sullivan of East Tennessee State, each shooting three-round total 218. Sharing the team title was Miami and Central Arkansas each with a 904.

The Beavers are back in action March 9-11 in Boulder City, Nev. for the UNLV Spring Invitational.
