Feb. 24, 2009

The Arizona State women's golf team tied for second at the Wildcat Invitational held at the par 72 6,146-yard, Peninsula Golf Club in Puerto Penasco, Mexico. With three players placing in the top 10, the Sun Devils shot a 14-over 878 (302-287-289) to tie with USC. ASU was playing without 2008 NCAA Champion Azahara Munoz. UCLA won the tournament, finishing 5-over 869 (287-295-287).

'It was another solid showing by the Sun Devils,' said seventh year head coach Melissa Luellen. 'We had wonderful individual performances by Carlota, Jennifer and Juliana with them finishing in the top 10.'

Freshman Carlota Ciganda earned her second top five finish in as many tournaments. Ciganda shot a 2-under 214 (74-69-71) to tie for third. She was one shot off the two medalists, Jodi Ewart of New Mexico and Lizette Salas of USC.

Senior Jennifer Osborn and junior Juliana Murcia finished the tournament tied for seventh. This is both Murcia and Osborn's second top 10 finish of the season. Murcia finished with a 1-over 217 (67-75-75) while Osborn shot a 1-over 217 (75-71-71).

Jaclyn Sweeney shot a 14-over 230 (79-75-76) to tie for 38th. Giulia Molinaro carded an 18-over 234 (81-77-76) to tie for 57th. Playing as an individual, Liisa Kelo shot a 29-over 245 (79-83-83) to finish 78th.

'We just need to sharpen up our four and five players to truly compete for every title,' said Luellen on the plan for the rest of the spring. 'I think we have had a great start to the spring and we look forward to having Azahara return for our next tournament.'

The Sun Devils will head to Orlando to compete in the UCF Challenge. The Sun Devils will look forward to two additions to their travel party. Munoz will compete for the first time since the fall and assistant coach Missy Farr-Kaye will travel with the team for the first time this season.
