Seattle, Washington is a far cry from Tucson, Arizona.
I left Tucson feeling a little too warm. It was 80 something degrees, I was in a tank top.
Since we arrived in Seattle, it's been raining. I've barely taken off a down jacket, except to get into the pool. It's freezing. I'm freezing.
Regardless, we've brought a little sunshine of our own and we're ready to start getting our hands dirty.
Pac-10's is my hands down favorite meet of the year. There's intense competition coupled with personal rivalries that get buried at the National level. There's pressure to do well -- we've won the past three Conference titles -- but we put more emphasis on winning the National title.
Pac-10's also marks the first time all season we will compete without the men by our side. As we work to defend our conference title, they will be back in Tucson training for their Pac-10 meet which will be held in Long Beach next week.
Being away from the men slightly changes the dynamic. Things get a little more girly. We can blare techno music out of the vans without little more than an eye roll from Frank. We can talk openly about 'Gossip Girls' without any complaints. Life is just sillier. But being at Conference does more than channel Cindy Lauper's 'Girl's Just Want to Have Fun'. In the next few days, we will transform from being a team to one solid unit.
The goals that we have set for ourselves will start to come to fruition. Realities that we never knew were possible will materialize. Some targets will be missed. All the same, championship season excites the athlete inside of everyone because of all the opportunity it provides.
Best believe this conference meet will be fast. Between the Pac-10 and SEC conference, you more or less have your top-10 women's teams in the nation. SEC's were held last week in Auburn, Alabama, and the results were outstanding. Our women read those results with excitement. It's time to get up on the blocks and race.
I hope that you will rally around our teams and show your support throughout our Championship season. We have worked incredibly hard all year in and out of the pool -- straining our bodies with heavy weights and stadium runs, grueling swims and thousands of ab exercises. And we do it because we are loyal to each other, our coaches, this program, and most of all, the university that we represent. Now is the time to put it all on the line, and you can best believe the Cats will be doing that at our remaining two meets.
