No. 24 ASU Extends Win Streak to 13 Straight
Feb. 26, 2009
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Danielle Orsillo scored 10 points and had three assists to lead No. 24 Arizona State to its 13th straight win, a 55-32 decision over Washington on Thursday night.
The Sun Devils (21-6, 13-2 Pac-10) moved within a half-game of first place in the league with the win, which extends the school record.
The Huskies (6-20, 2-14) have lost 14 of their past 15 games and have lost 20 games in a season for the first time since the 1999-2000 season.
Whitcomb and Mackenzie Argens led Washington with seven points apiece in the Huskies' lowest offensive output of the season. Washington scored 34 in a loss to California on Jan. 11.
Kate Engelbrecht added nine points, seven in the first half, for Arizona State.
The Huskies never recovered after missing their first 12 shots, failing to score for the first 10 minutes.
Washington was 2-of-23 from the field in the first half, committing 12 turnovers and trailing 28-8. The eight points were the fewest scored by a Washington team in a half and the least given up in a half by Arizona State in school history.
The Huskies shot 36 percent (9-of-25) in the second half.
Washington didn't score until Sami Whitcomb's 14-footer with 9:45 left in the first half and then missed the next eight shots. In the second half, the Huskies ran off seven straight points to get within 33-17.
But Briann January hit a 3-pointer and Arizona State opened up a 51-21 lead after an 11-point spurt.
The Sun Devils have beaten Washington 10 straight times dating back to the 2004-05 season and have not lost to the Huskies in Tempe since Jan. 11, 2001.
