A Baker's Dozen in 4-0 Win Over Colorado State
Feb. 27, 2009
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Junior Whitney Baker struck out a career-high 12, allowing only one hit in six innings, as the third-ranked Bruins defeated Colorado State 4-0 on Friday at the San Diego Classic. Freshman Andrea Harrison drove in a pair, while junior Kaila Shull and sophomore GiOnna DiSalvatore each had three-hit games.
The Bruins win their 11th in a row and improve to 16-2 on the season, while the Rams fall to 9-8.
UCLA jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair in the top of the first. Senior Amanda Kamekona led things off with a double to left-center, her third two-base hit of the day after recording a pair in the Bruins' first game against Utah. One out later, DiSalvatore walked and Shull singled to left to load the bases. Harrison followed with a single up the middle to plate Kamekona and DiSalvatore to put the Bruins on the board.
The Bruins added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Sophomore Katie Schroeder singled to right to start off the inning and DiSalvatore followed with a base hit that split the gap in right-center field. Schroeder moved to third on the hit, but DiSalvatore got into a rundown as she was going for second. While DiSalvatore was tagged out heading back to first, Schroeder alertly came in to score from third to make it 3-0. Shull then singled up the middle, and one out later, came all the way around to score on a double to left-center by junior Megan Langenfeld.
Baker (5-0) didn't allow a hit for the first 3 1/3 innings, striking out two in the first, third, fourth and sixth, three in the second and one in the fifth. Baker retired the final eight batters she faced, giving up three walks. Langenfeld tossed a 1-2-3 seventh inning, striking out two. Kamekona stole a pair of bases and had two hits for the Bruins, who had 12 as a team.
Dani Chaplin started for Colorado State, allowing four runs, eight hits and two walks in 4 1/3 innings with one strikeout. Kelli Eubanks threw the final 2 2/3 innings, giving up no runs and four hits with two strikeouts. Allison Majam had the lone hit for the Rams.
The Bruins play once on Saturday, facing San Diego State at the SDSU Softball Stadium at approximately 7 p.m.
