Western Carolina Wins Series Opener, 3-2
Feb. 27, 2009
LOS ANGELES - J.C. Lyons' RBI sacrifice fly in the seventh Friday provided the go-ahead run in the seventh while Daniel Ottone struck out the side in the ninth as the Western Carolina Catamounts beat the host USC Trojans, 3-2, in the nonconference series opener at Dedeaux Field.
Garrett Ozar (2-0) threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief to keep WCU perfect at 4-0 on the season. Ozar allowed only one hit with a walk and three strikeouts.
Ross Heffley put the Catamounts on the board first with a solo home run to right in the fourth off USC starter Brad Boxberger, who allowed just two hits in six innings with five walks and five strikeouts. WCU had the bases loaded twice against Boxberger in the third and sixth innings, but he got out of both jams unscathed.
USC (2-3) took the lead in the fifth on RBI singles from Joe De Pinto and Hector Rabago before WCU pushed two across in the seventh off reliever Ryan Cabral. Matt Johns singled to center, plating Trevor Callias from second for the tying run. Brent Green was hit by a Cabral pitch to load the bases before Lyons hit a long fly ball to left for the eventual winning run.
The series continues tomorrow with a 2 p.m. start and a 1 p.m. start on Sunday (March 1). Both games will be broadcast by a live video webcast on usctrojans.com, courtesy of TrojanTV All-Access.
