Beavers Drop Tight Contest To No. 5 Arizona State, 6-3
Feb. 28, 2009
TEMPE, Ariz. - Carlos Ramirez' solo home run in the eighth inning proved to be the game winner as the Oregon State baseball team dropped a tough contest to No. 5 Arizona State, 6-3, Saturday night at Packard Stadium.
Ramirez' shot off Oregon State reliever Kraig Sitton broke open a 3-3 tie and helped guide the Sun Devils to the win. Arizona State added two runs in the frame for the 6-3 victory.
Sitton was saddled with the loss after going one full inning. He struck out two and did not issue a walk but fell to 0-1 this season.
The loss dropped the Beavers to 3-2 this season. They are 2-1 in their first three games at the DeMarini Invitational, with the final game coming Sunday morning against Northern Illinois. Arizona State, meanwhile, improved to 8-0 this season.
Mitchell Lambson picked up the win for Arizona State after going three innings in relief of starter Seth Blair. Lambson allowed one hit while striking out three for his second win of the season.
Oregon State scored the first three runs of the game, and early. Wong led off the game with a double to center, and scored when the second batter of the game, Adalberto Santos reached on an error.
Two innings later, the Beavers took a 3-0 lead. Santos reached on a one-out walk, and moved to third when Ryan Ortiz reached on another Arizona State error. Jared Norris reached on a fielder's choice when Santos was unsuccessful going home, but with two outs, the Beavers took advantage. Two runs scored when Romero, batting fifth in the lineup, doubled to right.
Arizona State, however, answered back with a solo run in the fourth. The Sun Devils tied the game in the sixth when Jordan Swagerty hit a two-run home run to right.
Tyler Waldron made his second start of the season and went six full innings, striking out six and walking three. Swagerty's home run was the only extra base hit allowed by Waldron as he scattered six hits and three runs, two of which were earned. Because Waldron left with the score tied at three, he did not figure in the decision.
Zach Wilson led Arizona State with two hits. The Sun Devils managed eight hits off Waldron, Sitton and Mark Grbavac.
The Beavers conclude their trip to Arizona Sunday morning in a 9 a.m. PT contest against Northern Illinois. Oregon State will send Jorge Reyes (1-0, 3.00 ERA) to the mound while Northern Illinois counters with left-hander Chuck Lukanen (0-1, 1.93 ERA). The Huskies are 2-5 this season, last defeating Missouri, 5-2, on Saturday.
