The No. 23-ranked California men's tennis team (3-5) could not get past No. 4 USC (10-2) today as the Trojans swept the Golden Bears in a 7-0 match at the David X. Marks Tennis Stadium. Cal was close to winning the doubles point after the No. 24-ranked team of senior Geoff Chizever and sophomore Pedro Zerbini pulled off an upset win over No. 3 Robert Farah and Steve Johnson on the top doubles court. But the Trojans fought back to claim the all-important point as Jason McNaughton and Daniel Nguyen pushed past sophomore Bozhidar Katsarov and junior Kallim Stewart with a 9-7 win on court three.

Up a point, the Trojans continued to press with a heavy attack on the top two courts as No. 3-ranked Farah claimed a 7-5, 6-1 win over No. 88 Stewart on court one. Stewart would not go without a fight however as he pushed the USC junior for every point and nearly came away with the first set. Senior Eoin Heavey also came within a reach of a first-set win against Jaak Poldma on the second court but the Trojans again held as Poldma fought off the Heavey attack with a 7-5, 6-4 win.

Freshman Thai Tu stayed on serve with McNaughton for much of the first set and opened up strong in the second but McNaughton staved off any chances of a Cal comeback by getting the win after facing many break points. McNaughton's 6-4, 6-1 win over Tu on court six sealed the victory for USC. The Trojans added another point when No. 118-ranked Steve Johnson came from behind in a three-set match to defeat freshman Nick Andrews, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.

USC went up by six points as Chizever fell to Nguyen on court five, 6-3, 7-6(2) and then by seven when Katsarov lost his three-setter to Matt Kecki, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 on court four.

The Bears take a break from dual matches next weekend as the team heads to the La Jolla Beach Tennis Club for the USTA Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in La Jolla, Calif. For more information, please visit www.usta.com.
