Stanford's Kayla Pedersen Named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player Of The Week
March 2, 2009
STANFORD, Calif. - After putting up Stanford's first back-to-back 20-point performances by a player this season, sophomore forward Kayla Pedersen was named U.S. Bank Pac-10 Player of the Week Monday, the conference announced.
Pedersen scored 20 points in each of No. 2/2 Stanford's victories over UCLA and USC this weekend in Los Angeles, in addition to shooting a combined 65.2 percent (15-for-23) from the field which included a 58.3-percent mark (7-for-12) from three-point range.
The honor marks Pedersen's first career Pac-10 Player of the Week honor, and the fifth this season for Stanford.
Pedersen's efforts on the court played a vital role in Stanford's sweep of UCLA and USC, which, combined with California's loss Sunday at UCLA, vaulted the Cardinal (24-4, 15-1 Pac-10) into sole possession of first place in the Pac-10.
Friday night at UCLA, Pedersen scored 20 points on 7-for-11 shooting, and hit three triples while also grabbing seven rebounds and blocking three shots. Sunday, though she matched her 20 points from two days earlier, Pedersen surpassed her original career high of three triples by nailing four. She also grabbed 10 rebounds to post her seventh double-double of the season.
Now in the driver's seat for a ninth consecutive Pac-10 regular-season title and the top seed at the Pac-10 Tournament, Stanford closes the regular season at home this weekend, hosting Arizona Thursday at 7 p.m., then Arizona State Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. Saturday's contest is also set to be televised on Comcast SportsNet.
