Donna Kerr Named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week
March 3, 2009
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Sophomore Donna Kerr has been named Pacific-10 Conference Pitcher of the Week after posting a 4-0 record, a 1.91 earned run average and 41 strikeouts in 22 innings last week.
Kerr had double-figure strikeout games in three of her four outings, including a career-high 16 at San Diego on Sunday. On the year, she leads the Bruins with a 10-2 record and 112 strikeouts in just 72 2/3 innings. Kerr has struck out at least 10 in a game six times this season and ranks second among conference pitchers in strikeouts.
To open the week, Kerr went five strong innings at Cal State Fullerton, punching out 10 and giving up just two hits in a 6-2 victory. The sophomore started the Bruins' first game at the San Diego Classic against Utah on Friday, recording double figures in strikeouts for the second straight contest with 12 in six innings. Kerr took a no-hitter into the bottom of the sixth, but allowed a home run with two outs to break up the no-no and the shutout.
Kerr earned her third win of the week at San Diego State on Saturday, going four innings and giving up just two hits with three strikeouts in a 4-3 victory. On Sunday, the sophomore made it 4-for-4 with a new personal best in strikeouts against San Diego. Kerr tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout, her second shutout of the season. She recorded a strikeout in every inning, fanning the side in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh.
Kerr, a native of San Diego, ironically earned her first career Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week award at the San Diego Classic last year. At that tournament, Kerr did not allow a run in 11 innings, giving up only one hit while striking out 18, and threw the 16th perfect game in UCLA history against Saint Peter's.
Last season, the Bruins led the Pac-10 with nine Player or Pitcher of the Week awards. All-time, UCLA has earned 108 POW awards and 52 Pitcher of the Week honors.
