This Week
California tunes up for the outdoor season as well as the upcoming NCAA Indoor Championships with the Cal Outdoor Opener on Saturday, March 7, at Edwards Stadium in Berkeley. The Golden Bears host Stanford, Fresno State, UC Davis and San Francisco in the meet.

Strong MPSF Performances Propel Cal Men to No. 13 Ranking
The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) have ranked the Cal men's team 13th in its latest NCAA Division I Team Rankings. The Bears are coming off a second-place tie with Washington State at the 2009 MPSF Indoor Championships that took place Feb. 27-28 in Seattle. Both teams collected 78.50 points. UCLA (83.50) won the men's competition.

During the conference meet, Cal's winning distance medley relay (senior Mark Matusak, senior Francis Gadayan, freshman Sebastian Sam and sophomore Michael Coe,) set a school record with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 9:29.71.

Also at MPSFs, Coe won the men's one-mile run with a provisional-qualifying and school indoor record time of 4:00.29, the 15-fastest time in the United States, and senior Kellan Patterson won the men's 60-meter dash with a school indoor record time of 6.77 that was three hundredths of a second off an NCAA provisional-qualifying time.

Coe became the fifth-fastest Bear in the men's one-mile run, while senior Mark Matusak became the fourth-fastest Cal runner in the men's 3000-meter run with a fifth-place and lifetime-best time of 8:01.77, currently the 33rd fastest-time in the country.. One of the Bears whom Matusak trails on Cal's all-time 3000 list is Coe, who set a school and all-time record of 7:48.05 in that event in the Husky Classic on Feb. 14. Coe's 7:48.05 is the third-fastest time in the nation.

Senior Sean Carey placed third in the men's 800-meter run with a Cal indoor record and provisional-qualifying time of 1:49.65, which ranks him 20th in nation. Bears senior Ed Wright won the men's high jump with a provisional-qualifying mark of 2.21 meters (7-3.00). Wright's mark currently ranks him fourth in the nation. Sam ran a provisional-qualifying 1:49.86, the nation's 31st best time, to take fourth in the men's 800.

Cal Women Make Marks at MPSFs
The Cal women placed sixth at the MPSF Indoor Championships with 68.50 points, while Stanford won with 115. The Bears claimed their share of NCAA provisional qualifiers and school records.

Senior Brook Turner posted a provisional qualifier with her second-place time of 54.31 in the women's 400-meter dash that is also a Cal indoor record. In the women's 5000-meter run, sophomore Alison Greggor ran a Cal indoor record and provisional-qualifying 16:30.56 to place fourth.

The women collected four more provisional qualifiers: Bears senior Mackenzie Pierce won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.45 (No. 16 nationally); senior teammate Inika McPherson posted a mark of 1.82 meters (5-11.50, No. 12 nationally) in taking second in the women's high jump; sophomore Cherrelle Garrett clocked a provisional qualifying time of 7.38 to tie for second place in the women's 60-meter dash on Feb. 28 after running a provisional-qualifying time in the qualifying heats on Feb. 27 to tie her season-best time (7.34, No. 17 nationally); and sophomore Allison Stokke posted a mark of 4.00 meters (13-1.50) to tie for seventh place.
