Strong MPSF Performances Propel Cal Men to No. 13 Ranking
The United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) have ranked the Cal men's team 13th in its latest NCAA Division I Team Rankings. The Bears are coming off a second-place tie with Washington State at the 2009 MPSF Indoor Championships that took place Feb. 27-28 in Seattle. Both teams collected 78.50 points. UCLA (83.50) won the men's competition.
During the conference meet, Cal's winning distance medley relay (senior Mark Matusak, senior Francis Gadayan, freshman Sebastian Sam and sophomore Michael Coe,) set a school record with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 9:29.71.
Also at MPSFs, Coe won the men's one-mile run with a provisional-qualifying and school indoor record time of 4:00.29, the 15-fastest time in the United States, and senior Kellan Patterson won the men's 60-meter dash with a school indoor record time of 6.77 that was three hundredths of a second off an NCAA provisional-qualifying time.
Coe became the fifth-fastest Bear in the men's one-mile run, while senior Mark Matusak became the fourth-fastest Cal runner in the men's 3000-meter run with a fifth-place and lifetime-best time of 8:01.77, currently the 33rd fastest-time in the country.. Coe's 7:48.05 is the third-fastest time in the nation.
