Beavers Host Salbasgeon Suites on Senior Night

The meet ... The No. 9 Oregon State gymnastics team remains at home this week to host the 28th annual Salbasgeon Suites Invitational Friday, Mar. 6. Pacific Northwest rivals Washington, ranked 22nd in the nation, and Seattle Pacific will join the Beavers for a triangular meet in the final home meet of the season for Oregon State. Competition begins at 7 p.m. with the doors to legendary Gill Coliseum open at 6 p.m.

          Oregon State lost to Washington two weeks ago in Seattle snapping a five-year, 16-meet winning streak against the GymDawgs. The Beavers will be seeking payback on OSU’s Senior Night. Seven Oregon State seniors will be honored immediately following the meet. The seniors making their final appearance at Gill Coliseum include Brooke Barclay, Kera Bolen, Jami Lanz, D’Anna Piro, Johnnie Rae Schmelzer and Tasha Smith as well as team manager Cassandra Rowell.

          The meet will be webcast live via Beaver Nation Online, the audio/visual home of osubeavers.com, and will stream free of charge. Live Stats will also be available at osubeavers.com.

 

“Orange Out” Alert ... This week’s Salbasgeon Suites Invitational, the final home meet of the 2009 season, has been scheduled as an “Orange Out.” Fans are encouraged to wear orange in supporting the Oregon State gymnasts on Senior Night.

 

FLOOR PERFORMANCE FOR SMITH PLANNED ... Senior gymnast Tasha Smith is expected to provide a special finish to the Salbasgeon Suites Invitational  this week. Smith is slated to provide a “Special Performance” on the floor exercise following the meet.

 

Last week ... The Beavers recoverd from a down performance at Washington to score 49-plus points on all four events against then-No. 4 UCLA. Although OSU came away with the loss, there several positives including a team score of 196.350, the return to the bars lineup of freshman Olivia Vivian, a strong exhibition performance on the floor by Laura-Ann Chong, who is pushing for a lineup spot and several other solid performances:

          Mandi Rodriguez tied her season-high with a 9.925 on the vault and scored 9.95 on floor to win both individual titles.

          Jami Lanz tied for the beam title with a score of 9.875.

          • Lanz also tallied a 39.350, one of her highest marks of the year, score in the all-around to finish second.

 

What’s coming up ... The Beavers return to the road next week leaving the time zone to visit Big 12 power Missouri. The Tigers, who visited Gill Coliseum in 2008, are currently ranked No. 13.

 

RODRIGUEZ TALLIES another CONFERENCE Award ... For the second time in 2009, Mandi Rodriguez has earned the Pac-10 Special Performance of the Week.

          This week, Rodriguez’s award was based on her performances on the vault and floor exercise. Rodriguez scored a season-high tying 9.925 on the vault and then flirted with perfection with a 9.95 on the floor to win both event titles.

          Rodriguez previously won the Special Performance award following the Beavers’ initial home meet when she scored a 9.975 on the floor. She has also earned Pac-10 Gymnast of the Week this year.

 

IN THE RANKINGS ... This week, all four of OSU’s lineups are ranked among the top 11 in the nation. The floor team is the Beavers’ top ranked lineup at 7th (49.120), followed by bars (9th - 49.035) and beam (9th - 49.025) and vault (11th - 49.105).

          Individually, Mandi Rodriguez ranks No. 2 in the nation on the floor exercise. Rodriguez is also tied for 4th on the vault and is 8th in the all-around. Leslie Mak is 7th on the bars and Jen Kesler ranks 12th. Jami Lanz ranks 16th on beam, is 8th on the floor and is 15th in the all-around.
